Round Cut Diamonds Remain Eminently Popular

A diamond’s outline when viewed from the top defines its shape or cut. Round cut diamonds, interestingly, remain the most popular pieces used for rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets. In fact, it is the only shape that is regarded ‘exclusive,’ as all the other diamond cuts – pearl, oval, emerald, princess and other popular shapes - are all classified as ‘Fancy’ cuts.

Basically, the brilliant round cut is the revolutionary version of the earlier Old European shape. It was first introduced during the late nineteenth century, but it only gained commercial popularity only in 1919. The round cut demonstrates what inventor Marcel Tolkowsky describes as the ideal proportions for maximum diamond brilliance.

Regardless of the color, Round brilliant cut diamond always look brighter than diamonds in fancy shapes. This is due to their fifty-seven facets, which allow greater light dispersion and reflection. Round shaped diamonds also appear to have more fire and scintillation, making them the perfect gift to express one’s romantic love.
